In the recent global focus on Coding/Programming for students, the development of Apps becomes the trend in schools and have developed from basic concept to actual practices in the classrooms. More and more primary and secondary schools have participated in various kinds of Apps development and provide mobile solutions to the society. This is an inevitable trend of development of the new curriculum in IT in education and it becomes the focus of IT educators to help the next generation to better understand programming and acquire the necessary skills.
With the Support of Apple Education Team Hong Kong, AiTLE is glad to Co-organize a program called “Apps Development for iOS Trial Program“. Program detail as below :
- Objectives
- To provide an overall experience on teaching and learning Apps development for students and teachers
- To assist teachers to integrate the Apps development resources into the existing curriculum
- To create samples and experiences in schools for further planning
- Benefits
- There’s never been a better time to teach the next generation how to code. Swift 2, the powerful programming language created by Apple, makes writing code fun and interactive. Starting this fall in Xcode 7, everyone who has an Apple ID and is over 13 years old will be able to build apps that run directly on their Apple devices without joining a developer program. Playgrounds make writing Swift code simpler and it facilitate the teaching of Xcode for secondary students. All of these resources are available for free download, including iTunes U Course resources for teachers and lesson ideas and community.
- Program Overview
- This program involves the provision of educational hardware, software, professional development and technical support resources. It builds on a partnership between Apple Education Team and the participated schools as below:
- Apple Education Team
- Loan maximum 30 Macbook Pro to school for the purpose of letting students to develop iOS Apps
- Assist school to plan and implement the trial in class
- Development of teacher training program to facilitate teaching in classroom
- Help school to integrate Apps development into IT curriculum
- Facilitate growth and sharing of instructional materials
- Define evaluation, research and reviews on the effectiveness on teaching and learning
- Participated Schools
- nominate the program coordinator in school
- School support, endorse and facilitate the participated teachers in training and planning sessions
- Develop school based curriculum of Apps development in IT curriculum
- Design classroom lesson with the aim of enhancing students understanding on Apps development and concept in programming
- Facilitate and participate in evaluation, research and review process
- Share trial lesson, experience and results to other teachers, in-site and outside of school
- Requirements
- All local secondary schools are eligible for the application with the agreement of the basic requirement as below:
- Minimum of 2 teachers to be involved in the program. One teacher nominated as program coordinator, at least 2 teachers to be involved in lesson planning and trial out in class. Panel Head should also be involved.
- School Head should facilitate and endorse on all activities relating to this try out program
- Onsite or conference call planning meetings to communicate with involved teachers to determine the content, objectives, time and necessary arrangement
- IT Support should be working together for the basic IT set up and support for the try out.
- All local secondary schools are eligible for the application with the agreement of the basic requirement as below:
- Time Frame
- Phase 1: Enrolment
- All secondary schools are eligible to enrol
- There is limited no. of applicants and it will be served on a first come first serve basis.
- After the application, we will contact the responsible person and make arrangement accordingly within 2 weeks
- Phase 2: Preparation
- All involved teachers must attend all the training sessions provided
- Involved teacher(s) has to decide the try out period. Apple Consultant will advice on lesson design. The design can be on module only but not on single lesson
- Teacher should evaluate students ability and focus on the relevant parts of Apps development curriculum for the trial
- Phase 2: Classroom Try Out
- Consultant or coordinator will assist in the lesson delivery or just observe the lesson
- After the lessons, some data will be collected from students for the purpose of school development.
- Consultant will help on revising and suggesting improvements on the design of lessons, in the purpose of sharing it to other involved teachers and perhaps for the continual lesson design for Apps development
- Phase 3: Sharing
- After the lesson try out and the collection of students’ data, a session of teachers’ reflection will be conducted, target to share with other colleagues.
- Make a plan on the future development in school.
